Grecia and San Ramón are the lowest cost of living in the established expat Central Valley. Grecia, with its iconic red metal church, and San Ramón, a university town with a younger energy, offer authentic Costa Rica: fewer English-language services, more real integration into local culture.
Inland houses from $80K–$150K, among the most affordable in the country; comfortable expat houses and country homes between $150K and $400K. Lots and farms on the coffee hillsides offer the best $/m² in the Central Valley. A reference rental (2-bedroom house with a mountain view) runs about $700–$1,000/month. This isn't an ROI market — it's for personal use and economical retirement.
Functional local commerce, traditional markets, a town square, a real small-town feel. San Ramón adds university life (home to a UCR campus). For top international schools and hospitals, you're looking at 45–70 minutes to the central Valle Central.
An inland, titled zone — simple due diligence. On farms, always verify water and access. Security perception is high, quiet and established communities.
Grecia and San Ramón are the choice for someone who wants the lowest possible cost of living in a safe community, and doesn't mind being far from gringo restaurants or the private hospital. It's authentic, affordable Costa Rica — but check the internet if you're planning to work remotely, and the distance to a hospital if you have medical needs.
